Battlefield 2 has additional weapons that can be unlocked by increasing your rank in the game.  Your rank will be increased by earning points while playing on a ranked server online. In online play, these weapons can only be used in ranked servers, and only certain unlocks will be available to you (see below).

When you've earned an unlock, you will be notified when you log in to your account.  To use your weapon unlock you must first log in to a ranked server.  Once you are in a server you can select your unlocked weapon by pressing the up/down arrows next to your kit weapon (see image).  Once this is done, you will be able to use your unlocked weapon.

For base  Battlefield 2 users:

You will only be awarded one unlock for any rank that awards an unlock.

You will not be able to unlock any Special Forces weapons.  However if you have the latest patch installed you will be able to use these weapons on the battlefield if you pick up a Special Forces kit.

Note: You must have the Battlefield 2: Special Forces expansion pack to unlock the P 90 and the L 96 A1.

There are 2 additions to the Weapons that can be unlocked with the latest patch.

For  Battlefield 2: Special Forces expansion pack users:

Starting with Lance Corporal you will be awarded one additional unlock for every rank that awards an unlock.

If you have gained the rank of Lance Corporal before installing Battlefield 2: Special Forces and have already used that unlock slot, you will only be awarded one additional unlock slot (see chart below).  This means if you have base Battlefield 2, you will only get one unlock for the ranks above Lance Corporal that you have already chosen your regular unlocks for.

With Battlefield 2: Special Forces you will be able to select weapons from the Special Forces expansion pack to use online in the base Battlefield 2 maps.  These new weapons will appear as a second tier of unlocks.  This means you will have to press the class weapon button multiple times to get to this unlock.  These weapons will only be available for unlock once you have unlocked the first tier weapon for that class.  For example the Assault Class first tier weapon (G3) must be unlocked before you can choose the second tier weapon (FN2000 ).

Note: New weapons from Battlefield 2: Euro Forces will not be available as an unlock on any of the Battlefield 2: Special Forces maps.
